Part of Bavarian Motor Works’ Neue Klasse, the 2002 established BMW’s reputation for building compact sports sedans. Sharing little except a powertrain with the rest of the line, these sportier siblings – from but a four-cylinder engine – could produce 108 bhp. Higher performance models could even produce an astounding top speed of 185 km/h – remarkable in its time. This fan favourite would evolve into the BMW 3 Series and be the inspiration for the new 1 Series Coupe. It remains one of BMW’s most popular models ever.
